Chipchase sat through a monsoon-season downpour inside the one-room home of a shoe salesman and his family, who live in the sprawling Dharavi slum of Mumbai. Using an interpreter who spoke Tamil, he quizzed them about the food they ate, the money they had, where they got their water and their power and whom they kept in touch with and why. He was particularly interested in the fact that the family owned a cellphone, purchased several months earlier so that the father, who made the equivalent of $88 a month, could run errands more efficiently for his boss at the shoe shop. The father also occasionally called his wife, ringing her at a pay phone that sat 15 yards from their house. Chipchase noted that not only did the father carry his phone inside a plastic bag to keep it safe in the pummeling seasonal rains but that they also had to hang their belongings on the wall in part because of a lack of floor space and to protect them from the monsoon water and raw sewage that sometimes got tracked inside. He took some 800 photographs of the salesman and his family over about eight hours and later, back at his hotel, dumped them all onto a hard drive for use back inside the corporate mother ship. Maybe the family’s next cellphone, he mused, should have some sort of hook as an accessory so it, like everything else in the home, could be suspended above the floor.

The Dalai Lama has called for an investigation into whether cultural genocide, intentional or not, was taking place in Tibet.

The Buddhist spiritual leader added China was relying on force to achieve peace and that the international community had the “moral responsibility” to remind China to be a good host for the Olympic Games.

However, the Dalai Lama does not think the Olympics should be called off and he said China deserved to host the Games.

Police in India’s western state of Goa are questioning five men over the death of a 15-year-old British tourist.

Scarlett Keeling was found dead last month on Goa’s Anjuna Beach, an international tourist destination.

An autopsy determined the cause of death to be drowning, Superintendent of Police Bosco George said by telephone today from the state capital, Panaji. Her mother requested a second examination be carried out because of injuries to her body.

That report recommended police investigate the possibility she was murdered, he said. ``It says drowning cannot be ruled out’’ and didn’t establish whether she was raped.

In a dramatic comeback, New York Senator Hillary Clinton on Wednesday won the crucial state of Ohio and Rhode Island, ending frontrunner Barack Obama’s 12-win streak and signalling that the Democratic White House race was far from over.

“You know what they say. As Ohio goes, so goes the nation,” the 60-year-old former first lady told cheering supporters in Ohio, which had 141 delegates at stake.

Polls projected at least 16 percentage points lead for Clinton, who had been facing mounting pressure from rivals and even supporters to call it quits in case of a defeat in either of two big-ticket states of Ohio and Texas.

Earlier, Obama won the Vermont primary (15 delegates), clinching nearly 60 per cent of the votes for a 12th straight win over Clinton, but she bounced back with a win in the north eastern state of Rhode Island (21 delegates), collecting about 53 per cent of the votes.

“This nation is coming back and so is the campaign,” a beaming Clinton said as the two rivals nervously waited for a result in the crucial lone star state of Texas (193), which the media said was too close to call.

Texas is expected to give a clearer picture on the preferred candidate ahead of the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado on August 25.
